A Love Story in Pictures

I have been following Leah & Wes for a few years now, documenting many events from their engagement, to their Sunshine Coast destination wedding, to their first pregnancy, to maternity photos of their baby boy, Jaxson.  It has been an honour to be their 'life photographer' and I thought I would share a few photos from this journey including the most recent portraits of the newest member of the family with a Christmas theme, just in time for them to send out their 2011 Christmas cards!

It all started in 2009 with their engagement portraits.  We met at Esquimalt Lagoon just in time for the sunset.  Toward the end of the shoot everything was cast in a fantastic purple glow...

In 2010 I joined them at a lovely little resort on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast for their wedding.  The ocean views made a perfect backdrop for the ceremony, and there were herons on the shoreline and bald eagles in the trees overhead.  It was a beautiful wedding and a lot of fun!

It is now 2011 and this fall was baby belly time!  With Leah about 8 months pregnant we went back to the ocean, this time at Albert Head Lagoon, and we also did some more intimate portraits indoors (the weather was much too cool for bare bellies).

And just in time for Christmas they have their adorable baby boy, Jaxson! Here are a few of my favorite photos from our latest portrait shoot.

Following Leah and Wes over the last three years has been a privilege, and I look forward to many more!

Nightscapes

Winter time in Canada means, among other things, more darkness!  While I'm not a big fan of cold and dark the 'bright' side (pun intended) is the extra airtime that the moon gets.  It has been a full moon recently, and there was a lunar eclipse as well.  Rather than leave my cameras in the Lowepro bag I have been out in the dark with them.  The first photo was taken at about 6:45 in the morning of the lunar eclipse.  The second photo was a day or so later, at about 6:30 in the evening.  Neither of them is of just the moon itself, so I've taken to calling them 'nightscapes'. Hope you enjoy!

Spring Fun

With a short break from my graduate program almost at its end, I did my best to make the most of the sunny weather this weekend. My friend Sasha and I went for a long horseback ride to Elk Lake and had a picnic lunch there, and the next day my friend Laura and I went for a hike in Gowlland Tod Park with some incredible views! I thought I would share a few snapshots from this lovely weekend, so here they are!

Vacation in Mexico

I haven't been very active on my blog lately, and I place the blame for that squarely on my master's program (to which it would seem I have sold my soul)! However, I did manage to take a vacation last week, and went to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico to visit my parents who are there for a month enjoying their retirement. We stayed in an adorable little casa in a small town called Chemuyil. The neighbourhood contains a perfect mix of locals and ex-pats, and we avoided the resort scene entirely. I thought I would share some of the scenic photos I took exploring the region while I adjust to the busy life once again!

A Rainy Day Hike

It was a rainy Sunday in Victoria today, and my friend Sasha and I went for a muddy hike. The forests are colourful right now; bright green moss and bright red arbutus trees, and the creeks and waterfalls are at full capacity. Here are a couple photos from the hike!

New Baby

Alison was the winning bidder on a portrait shoot I had donated for a silent auction fundraiser for the World Parrot Refuge. She was pregnant at the time and knew exactly what she would like portraits of! Yesterday I made the drive up-island to beautiful Parksville for the session with new baby Leif and the rest of the family! Here are a couple photos of the newest member of the family!

(Please visit the World Parrot Refuge website if you would like to help this charity, as they have lost their government funding.)

Back from Hawaii!

Jennifer and Aaron were married on the beach in Hawaii, and held a reception for all of their friends and family when they returned. I joined them on the mainland for the weekend to photograph their reception, which brought a little bit of Hawaii to BC in November! It was a lovely event and a lot of fun! Here is a sneak peak : )

A Rainy Fall Day...

Last fall I posted a super close-up photo of the resident spider (you can see it's eyes and it is sucking on a bug - eeeeww). Well the spiders are back again this fall (I suppose it's the next generation?) and I've mostly ignored them so far. Today it has been raining, however, and I was out hiking. When I got home I couldn't help but notice their webs all decorated with raindrops, so I had to get out the camera again and snap a few pictures. No eyeballs and victims this time, just the spider and the lovely web. As I was taking the photos this one started using her legs to push the raindrops off of her body. It wasn't very effective, but helped a little I guess - better than coming indoors I say!

2010 Sidney Fine Art Show!

I am so surprised and proud to have two of my photographs accepted for display in the 2010 Sidney Fine Art Show here on Vancouver Island! As described on their website, "The Sidney Fine Art Show is a world-class juried art show featuring work by artists primarily from around B.C.". I entered two of my scenic photographs (printed on canvas and gallery mounted) for adjudication with only the faintest hope that one of them might be accepted to the show, which displays works by many of the finest artists in BC. I am absolutely thrilled to hear that both of them made it through the adjudication process!! They will be on display from October 15th to 17th at the Mary Winspear Centre in beautiful Sidney by the Sea. If you live in this region I encourage you to check it out (it really is a fantastic show) and please let me know if you go - I'm so excited to be a part of it!

For those who don't live in the area, the two works that will be on display are pictured below. The first is a photo I took in Queensland, Australia, on Fraser Island. The second is a photo I took during a smoky summer in the Okanagan, of Black Mountain and the surrounding fields - the area where I was raised : )

September on the Island

What started as a soggy Sunday morning -with dark overcast sky and pouring rain- soon turned into a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon. It was almost as if Mother Nature knew there was a photo shoot scheduled! (And the puddles were a fun bonus!)

Pet Portraits - Cassie

A few days ago I did a pet portrait session with Heather and Cassie the lab. Cassie is a lovely girl getting up there in years and Heather decided to have some portraits done, as Cassie is an important member of the family. We went to one of Cassie's favourite spots and she was so excited she was acting ten years younger as we got started. By the end of the shoot she was a pooped pup, but it was a lot of fun. Here is a preview pic as I get started with the editing!

A Frog and a Princess

I am still editing images of the wedding I photographed in Ontario's cottage country. Being out there with the bride, groom, and all the family for an entire weekend means that there are plenty of family photos and lifestyle portraits to compliment the basic wedding coverage! As I work through the photos I am struck by a few images I shot of the bride's niece. She has striking blue eyes, and the most adorable freckles. While the bride and groom were getting ready she was busy catching critters along the lakeshore, and I'm thrilled by the contrast of her pretty pink nail polish with the slippery frog that she showed me! I had to share a couple photos:

I love pet portraits!

Yesterday I was contacted by Carol and asked to meet with her on short notice to photograph her Havanese puppies, as two of them are off to their new homes today! Needless to say they were adorable; I have such a tough job ; )

Julie & Lanny are married!

Julie and Lanny's Ontario wedding was fun and informal, with beautiful Bass Lake as the backdrop for their ceremony. The kids caught frogs and sunfish along the shores while the wedding party got dressed and ready. The sound of thunder added a little excitement to the nuptials, but the rain held off for most of the day. We had tons of fun with the portrait shoot – the wedding party had me out of breath from laughing so hard, and the bride and groom even climbed onto a wooden raft and floated out into the lake!

Congratulations Julie & Lanny, and thank you for taking me with you all the way to Ontario to photograph your wedding!

Congratulations Eva & Josh

Eva and Josh were married at the family farm north of Victoria in a beautiful, brightly coloured ceremony that ended with the bride and groom driving away in a tractor! One of my favourite things about wedding photography is the opportunity to witness (and record) the love and laughter shared by the couple and their family & friends. It is an honour to be included in such intimate or outrageous moments, and this wedding was no exception! Congratulations to Josh and Eva - it was a perfect day!
